Record R-Rated Opening Expected with $165M, Best Year-to-Date

Box office tracking services like NRG and Screen Engine are forecasting a tremendous opening for Disney Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. Estimates suggest an opening of $160M-$165M, which would not only set a new record for the year’s best domestic box office debut but also for an R-rated movie. The original Deadpool, released in 2016, currently holds the record for the largest R-rated opening at $132.4M.

Earlier projections from tracking service Quorum suggested a $200M opening, and despite the more conservative estimates, Deadpool & Wolverine is still poised for an impressive debut. Analysts highlight that tracking services often underestimate the number of Latino and Hispanic moviegoers, and this could help the film surpass current expectations.

Disney is confident in the $160M+ range for this much-anticipated team-up of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, directed by Shawn Levy. Current presales totaling $19M are sitting at a healthy -15% behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4M) while outperforming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4M) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($181.3M).

Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to appeal primarily to a male audience, but Disney aims to broaden its reach. In a recent social post, Ryan Reynolds’ character mimicked the cover of Taylor Swift’s Evermore album, fueling speculation that the singer might make a cameo in the film.

Reynolds and Jackman have kickstarted their global promotional tour for the film, recently making a stop in Shanghai, China, for a fan event and photo call.

The first two Deadpool films both achieved an A Cinemascore, signaling high audience satisfaction.
