In February 2023, at Poguelandia, Chase Stokes, who plays John B. Routledge, confirmed that Outer Banks had been greenlit for a fourth season. He expressed immense gratitude to fans who have supported the series over the years.

“This is an incredible moment for all of us,” said Stokes. “To our cast and crew, thank you so much for all of your hard work.”

Outer Banks co-creators, executive producers, and showrunners Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke also shared their excitement in a joint statement to Variety. They remarked how thrilling it was to see Poguelandia come to life and promised more adventures for the Pogues in the upcoming season.

“The Pogues are enjoying an adventure of a lifetime and we now get to map out more twists and turns as the joyride continues into Season 4 of Outer Banks,” the trio said. “Thank you to Netflix, our cast, and the amazing fans who helped to make this happen.”

During Season 3, the Pogues were celebrated for their discoveries upon returning to Kildare County from El Dorado. Season 4 will continue this narrative, exploring the Pogues’ journey as they leave the deserted island with newfound knowledge about Blackbeard’s lost treasure. This new treasure hunt will be the central adventure for the upcoming season.

“We felt like we needed to migrate them out of school,” Josh explained at the June 2023 Tudum: A Global Fan Event. “We think about the first three seasons as a trilogy, and now we’re starting over on another sort of trilogy. We’re going to have new villains, a new treasure hunt, and a new life situation.”

Chase previously hinted at the characters dealing with self-doubt in Season 4. “Being in the situation that John B and Sarah are in will force them to evaluate everything,” he told People in March, referring to the trauma both characters experienced after losing their fathers. “Where they are, what their purpose is, what their intentions are. Was the value of it worth it? If they could go back and change things, would they? Or do they feel OK with it?”

The regulars, including Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Davis, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, and Drew Starkey, will return for Season 4. Additionally, new cast members like J. Anthony Crane, Pollyanna McIntosh, Brianna Brown, Rigo Sanchez, and Mia Challis will join the series.

However, Charles Esten and Charles Halford’s characters—Ward Cameron and John Routledge, respectively—will likely not return due to their characters’ deaths in the previous season.

Filming for Season 4 began in summer 2023 but faced delays due to the writers and SAG strike. Production resumed in November 2023. By March 2024, Chase announced they were “getting close” to the finish line.

Netflix unveiled a trailer during the 2023 Tudum: A Global Fan Event and included a short clip in their 2024 teaser slate. No new teaser has been released since.

As of now, there is no confirmed release date for Outer Banks Season 4.

Showrunners initially planned to conclude the series by Season 5. However, Josh revealed that this timeline might change. “I don’t know if I could put a real number on it right now—how long it takes to get to that ending might expand, but we now know the shape of the end of the story,” he told Entertainment Weekly in February 2023. “We’re going to take it as long as we can, for sure.”
