Report: Apple in Talks with Studios for More Licensed Movies

Apple is reportedly looking to expand its Apple TV+ streaming platform by adding more licensed movies. The tech giant has been in discussions with major movie studios to secure licensing agreements, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources. This move follows the success Apple experienced after licensing dozens of films last spring.

Some of the previously licensed movies that made their way to Apple TV+ include popular titles like “Titanic,” “Argo,” and “Mean Girls.” These additions have proven to be beneficial for both Apple and its streaming service, prompting the company to seek out more such deals.

Apple has reportedly been negotiating for both domestic and international rights with movie studios. When contacted for comment on the Bloomberg report, Apple did not provide a response.

Historically, Apple TV+ has primarily relied on original content to build its library, competing with other platforms like Netflix, Max, and Disney+. However, other streaming services often include a large selection of licensed content in addition to their original productions. Live sports have also become more prevalent on streaming platforms.

For instance, Apple TV+ has ventured into live sports, offering “Friday Night Baseball” in partnership with Major League Baseball and “MSL Season Pass” through a deal with Major League Soccer. The latter, however, requires an additional subscription.

As of October, an Apple TV+ membership costs $9.99 per month, following a $3 price increase.
