Requests for One Character Continue Post-Series, Says ‘The Crown’ Casting Director

The Crown concluded its six-season run on Netflix nearly a year ago, yet casting director Robert Sterne reports that he still receives inquiries about opportunities to portray Meghan Markle. In a conversation with Variety, Sterne shared that actors are still sending letters, expressing their desire to play Markle. The final episodes of The Crown were released on Netflix on December 14, 2023.

“I still get letters saying, ‘Please, can I be Meghan Markle?'” Sterne revealed. “And I think, ‘Well, the moment’s gone.'”

The sixth and final season of The Crown portrayed events from 1997 through 2005, focusing on significant events in the British Royal Family during that period. The first four episodes of the season dealt with the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The latter six episodes covered the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother, the beginnings of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Meghan Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry was not part of the series’ chronological narrative.

Season 6 of The Crown starred an impressive cast, including Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Dominic West, Olivia Williams, Bertie Carvel, Claudia Harrison, Marcia Warren, Salim Daw, Khalid Abdalla, Elizabeth Debicki, Ed McVey, Luther Ford, and Meg Bellamy.

Although The Crown has officially ended, series creator Peter Morgan has hinted at the possibility of continuing the story in the form of a prequel. However, he emphasized that it is not something that would happen immediately.

“I do have an idea,” Morgan mentioned last fall. “But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need to be a unique set of circumstances to come together… If I were to go back to The Crown, it would definitely be to go back in time.”

Morgan further explained in a separate interview, “In the short term, I will not be writing anything set in a palace anywhere. I expect to miss it. Maybe later on, at some point in my life, I’ll miss it enough, you know, to pick up the pen again. But really, at the moment, there’s no plan… You never rule anything out, but in the short term — absolutely not.”

For those interested in revisiting or watching for the first time, all six seasons of The Crown are available for streaming on Netflix.
