Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has clarified that his wife, Cheryl Hines, is not a supporter of former President Donald Trump, despite his own recent endorsement of Trump.

Kennedy explained during an appearance on TMZ that his wife had the opposite reaction to encouragement regarding his decision. This came up after host Harvey Levin noted reports suggesting Hines had attended a meeting with Kennedy and Trump.

“I would say Cheryl’s reaction was the opposite of encouraging,” Kennedy stated.

Kennedy, a former independent presidential candidate, mentioned that Trump reached out to him after he was shot at a Pennsylvania rally last month. He added that his wife, known for her role on Curb Your Enthusiasm, urged him to take the meeting with Trump and attended to ensure no hasty decisions were made.

“For Cheryl, this is the opposite of what she would want to do. She went along with it because she loves me and she wanted to be supportive of me, but it was not something she ever encouraged,” Kennedy elaborated.

Describing his wife as a “lifelong Democrat,” Kennedy admitted that his endorsement of Trump has caused her significant discomfort.

“She is a lifelong Democrat and the idea of me supporting Donald Trump was, like I said, it was something she would have never imagined, something that she never wanted in her life,” Kennedy emphasized. “I think it causes her a lot of discomfort and I’m very grateful to her for giving me support, but she was not somebody who was clamoring for this move. I would say the opposite is true.”

Hines has faced some backlash regarding her husband’s presidential campaign and his support for Trump. Actor Bradley Whitford criticized Hines in a post on X, accusing her of remaining silent about her “lunatic” husband’s endorsement of Trump.

Kennedy responded to Whitford on TMZ, accusing him of “bullying” his wife.

“I had to suppress some strong feelings about that. It’s a template for bullying. Here you have a guy and instead of challenging me, he’s attacking my wife,” Kennedy said. “Who would do that? What kind of person, what kind of man would do that? Why wouldn’t he talk to me directly?”
