Retta Searches for Spooky Homes in HGTV’s Scariest Houses in America

HGTV is embracing the spooky season with a new twist to its popular Ugliest House in America series. This time, comedian and actress Retta teams up with HGTV designer Alison Victoria for a spine-chilling follow-up series titled Scariest House in America.

In this new series, Retta embarks on a cross-country journey to uncover America’s creepiest properties. Each episode follows Retta as she explores these eerie homes, while Victoria plans a $150,000 renovation for the scariest one. The debut season will showcase a variety of hair-raising houses, including a bat-infested former jailhouse, an alleged mobster den, and one home exuding serious “witchy vibes.”

Retta is best known for her hilarious role as Donna Meagle in the NBC sitcom Parks & Recreation and for playing Ruby Hill in the drama series Good Girls. Since 2022, she has hosted five seasons of Ugliest House in America, witnessing some of the most botched renovations imaginable. However, dealing with spooky homes will be a new challenge even for this seasoned host.

The series will feature nine different homes located throughout the Midwest, Northeast, and South. Viewers can expect to see everything from built-in death traps and questionable taxidermy to terrifying basements and ghost sightings.

Retta candidly shared her initial apprehension about the new series, admitting that she is easily scared. “I was cool with the summer road trip and ugly in paradise, but, for a gal that is spooked by every creak, critter and errant hair that brushes my shoulder, this wasn’t it. Glad I got through it, but I won’t lie and say I ‘enjoyed’ it,” she confessed.

The scariest house will be awarded a $150,000 renovation by Victoria, transforming it into a livable and hopefully less terrifying home. Both Scariest House in America and Ugliest House in America are produced by Big Fish Entertainment. Fans can also look forward to new episodes of Ugliest House in America in 2025.

Fans eager to stay updated with exclusive content from the series can find more information on HGTV’s website or by following @HGTV and the #ScariestHouse tag across various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and X (formerly Twitter).

For those who may have missed past seasons of Ugliest House in America, they are available for streaming on Max and Discovery+. Similarly, Scariest House in America will stream concurrently on Max and Discovery+ with its linear airing.

HGTV’s Scariest House in America premieres on Friday, Oct. 4, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
