Review: Czech Spider-Man Climbs to the Olympic Heights

At ease in the mountains … Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits Photograph: PR image

Witnessing world-famous rock climber Adam Ondra scale towering mountain ranges feels like watching a real-life Spider-Man in action. With his incredible strength and agility, this Czech athlete has mastered some of the toughest climbing routes known to man. Though he is most comfortable among nature’s skyscrapers, Ondra felt the pull of competitive climbing again when the sport was included in the 2020 Olympic Games. An intimate documentary by Jan Šimánek and Petr Záruba offers a personal glimpse into the grueling preparation that marked Ondra’s path to Tokyo.

In Ondra’s home, shelves are laden with cups and trophies of every size. Living with his fiancée, Iva—an accomplished climbing champion herself—highlights the sacrifices made by both athletes. During a routine practice, Iva became emotional, revealing in her interview how Ondra’s preferred, advanced training terrains limit her ability to practice her own climbs. The documentary foregrounds her pivotal role in Ondra’s success, as she steps back in her career to support him. When Ondra faces climbing challenges, Iva is there, not just on the belay line but also as his emotional anchor.

Indeed, an athlete’s achievements are far from solitary feats. They often result from significant teamwork. The documentary also thoughtfully addresses mental health, showcasing Ondra strengthening not only his physical endurance but also his psychological well-being. By highlighting the vulnerabilities of a seemingly unbeatable athlete, the filmmakers successfully unveil the unseen human side of athletic competition.

• Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits is on True Story from 23 August.
