Review: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 (English Dub)

After being left by Eris, Rudeus finds himself shattered. He attempts to rebuild his life but makes some grave mistakes. Struggling with a troubling health issue, he decides to enroll at the Ranoa University of Magic in hopes of finding a remedy.

I never imagined an anime dedicating an arc to curing erectile dysfunction. Surprisingly, it’s handled well and even becomes engaging. The issue is addressed from a psychological perspective, focusing on the emotional aftermath of his brief relationship with Eris. This nuanced take contributes significantly to Rudeus’s emotional and psychological development.

The season began with a prequel episode that was enjoyable but somewhat spoiled the reveal of the character Fitz. If you prefer unspoiled surprises, stop reading here. Fitz, crucial to Rudeus’s progress, turns out to be his childhood friend Sylphie. Her compassion and understanding play a major role in helping Rudy overcome his condition.

Rudeus is a compelling figure because he navigates his current world with the memories and experiences of his past life. This duality makes him a controversial character, especially in his interactions with some of the girls around him. This also leads to internal conflicts within his family, as fitting into a new family dynamic is hard when you have vivid memories of a past family. Episode twenty-two stands out due to its rich emotional conflicts and significant consequences for Rudeus and his family.

Studio Bind, now in their second season of Mushoku Tensei, continues to impress. Although action scenes are sparse, when they do occur, they’re spectacular. The fight sequences are among the best in the genre. Given that Bind was established specifically for the Mushoku Tensei project, their dedication is evident. Anything less would be disappointing.

A third season is already confirmed, which is exciting news. This upcoming season is expected to cover some of the best parts of the light novel. While some elements have been left out so far, there’s hope they might be included in future OVAs or episodes. The tease of Eris in the final episode leaves viewers eager for more. Let’s hope the wait for the next season isn’t too long.
