RFK Jr. Overcomes ‘Abhorrence’ for Trump to Offer Support Despite Lawsuit

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has revealed that he has moved past his previous feelings of “abhorrence” toward Donald Trump to endorse his presidential campaign, despite their history of legal disputes. The former attorney, known for his controversial views on Covid and environmental matters, reflected on his past lawsuits against Trump regarding golf course projects in New York during an interview with Dr. Phil, which aired on Wednesday. This conversation followed an interview with Trump the day before.

During the interview, Kennedy acknowledged his shift in political sentiment. He stated that while he had once aligned with the typical Democratic disdain for Trump, he now finds himself preferring a Republican victory in the upcoming November election. “Even though I grew up in the Democratic party and had the same sort of abhorrence for President Trump, like many Democrats do… four years ago,” he explained.

Dr. Phil probed Kennedy about the influence he might have on independent voters and the election’s outcome. “If this comes down to independents… and you’ve given your support to the Trump candidacy, do you feel like you may very well be the one that selects the next President of the United States by your influence?” Phil asked. In response, Kennedy acknowledged that was a distinct possibility.

In a separate interview, Trump expressed his gratitude for Kennedy’s endorsement, praising him as “smart” and “a different kind of a guy.” However, Trump was noncommittal when asked about the possibility of offering Kennedy a position in a potential future administration. “I think he’s going to be a great asset. Will I have him in the administration? I don’t know. We haven’t discussed it. But he adds a lot to the election,” Trump remarked.

Despite the legal battles they’ve waged against one another, Kennedy confirmed that he and Trump share a friendly relationship. He noted, “We’ve known each other for a long time; in fact, I’ve litigated against him.” He recounted how he had sued Trump several times regarding golf courses he attempted to build near the New York State reservoir. “But even during that time when I was litigating against him, he ended up giving me a ride to Florida on his plane, so we were friendly, and we had a great time and a lot of laughs,” he added, characterizing Trump as “very congenial and interesting” as well as “very warm.”

RFK Jr. is recognized for his advocacy surrounding environmental issues, further complicating the dynamics of his endorsement of Trump, who has a mixed record on similar topics. As the political landscape evolves and the election approaches, Kennedy’s endorsement of the former president could have significant ramifications for both their political trajectories.

As the discussions continue, Kennedy’s unique position as a former Democrat supporting Trump may attract attention from various voter demographics. His influence, particularly among independent voters, could be a pivotal factor in the upcoming election, and his evolving political stance raises questions about potential shifts within the broader Democratic party.

With this notable endorsement, the upcoming election will likely become even more competitive, highlighting shifting alliances and personal relationships within the political arena.
