Richard Gere Secures Major TV Role Following 2023 Health Scare

Richard Gere is making his debut in television, a year after a health scare in Mexico. According to Deadline, the American Gigolo star will join Michael Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright in The Agency.

The espionage series will be available on Paramount+ with Showtime and is produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. The show is a remake of the French series Le Bureau des Legendes and centers on Fassbender’s character, an undercover CIA agent forced to abandon his covert life and return to regular duty. His life takes a complicated turn when a past romance resurfaces, challenging his professional and personal boundaries.

In the series, Gere will assume the role of London Station Chief Bosko, drawing upon his own eight-year undercover experience to drive his motivations. The series is produced by Showtime Studios in collaboration with 101 Studios.

“Richard Gere stands in a class of his own, adored by generations of fans worldwide for his exceptional ability to infuse depth and authenticity into every role he plays,” said Paramount co-CEO Chris McCarthy. “We are thrilled to have him join our extraordinary cast, which includes Michael Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright in Showtime’s latest thriller.”

The announcement comes after a challenging 2023 for Gere, in which he was hospitalized in Mexico due to a persistent cough and pneumonia. “He is recovering and feeling much better today,” his wife Alejandra Silva updated at the time, reassuring fans that “the worst has already passed.”

Evidence suggests Gere is fully recovered and ready to dive back into work. The Agency is set to premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime. Gere is also teaming up again with director Paul Schrader for the project Oh’ Canada, starring alongside Jacob Elordi and Uma Thurman.
