Richard Keys reignites feud, calls Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher ‘lucky’

Richard Keys has once again found himself in a public spat with Jamie Carragher, suggesting that Carragher’s past indiscretions were much graver than the issue that led to Keys’ own departure from Sky Sports.

Keys left Sky Sports in 2011 along with former Everton player Andy Gray after off-air comments about female assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis and other sexist remarks were made public.

Currently with BeIN Sports, Keys and Gray have frequently criticized their former employer. Recently, Keys questioned why Carragher is still employed by Sky Sports after being caught on camera spitting toward a football fan and his young daughter near Old Trafford in 2018.

On The Obi One Podcast, Keys voiced his concerns: “If it’s OK to spit on teenagers and continue to be employed then great. For me, that was far more serious – but I’m not making the judgment on that! I was pleased he didn’t get sacked as it gave me the opportunity to say, when you consider what happened to us for our ‘crimes’ and what he did on film… there’s no comparison.”

Following the spitting incident, Carragher was suspended but resumed his role five months later. Immediately after the event, the former Liverpool defender expressed deep remorse in a public interview.

“What I did is disgusting. I apologize for it. If someone in that game had done that, I’d have vilified them for the next few days,” Carragher admitted. “I hope, after 25 years in the public eye, that five seconds of madness will not overshadow my life. I hope moving forward I can show who I truly am. This was a significant error.”

The incident that brought Keys and Gray’s behavior into the spotlight was a pre-match discussion before a Premier League game between Wolves and Liverpool. During the conversation, Keys remarked, “Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her,” referring to Massey-Ellis. Gray responded, “Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule,” to which Keys added, “Of course they don’t… The game’s gone mad.”

Conflicts between Keys and Carragher are not new. In 2022, Keys labelled Carragher ‘borderline racist,’ prompting the former Liverpool defender to call Keys a ‘sad, desperate man’.
