Delegates are arriving for the second day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday, 16 July.

Nikki Haley is expected to address the event, a change from her previous statement that she would not attend.

Her decision was made hours after Donald Trump was injured during an assassination attempt on Sunday. Her office confirmed later that she would speak at the convention.

Mr. Trump was shot in the ear while addressing a rally in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief, tragically died in the shooting as he tried to protect his family at the rally.

Haley, who previously served as the United Nations ambassador and governor of South Carolina, was a significant rival to Trump during the 2024 primary contest, though she dropped out in March.

Two months later, she declared she would vote for Mr. Trump, and last week she announced her decision to instruct her convention delegates to support her former challenger.

This comes after Mr. Trump announced JD Vance as his running mate on Monday.

The Ohio senator recently caused controversy by suggesting that under a Labour government, Britain could become the “first truly Islamist country” with a nuclear weapon.

Angela Rayner, Britain’s deputy prime minister, responded, saying she “does not recognise” JD Vance’s claim.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Rayner commented, “I think he said quite a lot of fruity things in the past.”

She added that she looks forward to meeting Mr. Vance should the former president be re-elected.
