Rob Lowe Reveals ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Sequel in Early Stages (Exclusive)

It’s been almost 40 years since Rob Lowe’s coming-of-age dramedy, St. Elmo’s Fire, first debuted, and the actor says a potential sequel is now in the early stages of development.

Rob, alongside his son and Unstable co-star John Owen Lowe, 29, discussed the possibility of a sequel while promoting the second season of their Netflix comedy series. The 60-year-old actor shared details with ET’s Ash Crossan about the long-rumored reboot.

The recent release of the documentary Brats — which delves into the story of the Brat Pack, a group of young actors including Lowe who dominated ’80s pop culture — has reignited interest in a follow-up to Lowe’s cult classic 1985 film.

“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Rob revealed, noting that the Brats documentary has “only added to the excitement around it.”

“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” Rob cautioned. “So we will see.”

Rob starred in the original film alongside Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, and Ally Sheedy. The story follows seven friends who graduate from college and try to navigate their post-collegiate lives.

Interestingly, John Owen — who humorously refers to the film as “St. Elmers” — admitted he hasn’t seen the movie. Despite this, father and son have been working together on their Netflix comedy series Unstable, where they portray a fictional father-son duo.

John Owen stars as Jackson, the shy and reserved son of eccentric and semi-egotistical tech mogul Ellis, played by Rob. “This whole show is based on his incessant trolling of me on his Instagram,” Rob joked. “So the very nature of this relationship, and being able to put it out there on a TV show, is so special.”

Unstable season 2 premieres Aug. 1 on Netflix.
