Romulus Continues Box Office Domination Despite Three Wide Releases

Disney is on track to dominate the summer box office for the ninth time, with their 20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus likely to surpass Deadpool & Wolverine in its fifth weekend, pulling in $18M compared to $17M. By Tuesday, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus had already grossed a total of $50.6M.

It Ends With Us, a collaboration between Sony and Wayfarer Studios, is set to become Blake Lively’s highest-grossing domestic film, surpassing Green Lantern ($116.6M). Directed by Justin Baldoni, the romantic drama is projected to earn around $13M.

Despite new studio releases, it appears existing titles will continue to perform well. Late August sees a significant number of school-aged viewers returning to classes, with Comscore reporting that 33% of K-12 students and 58% of college students are on break. Strong summer performances might taper off as a result.

Amazon MGM Studios is releasing the Zoe Kravitz-directed thriller, Blink Twice, starring Channing Tatum, though it’s not expected to achieve blockbuster numbers typically associated with Tatum. Initially greenlit by MGM’s previous administration under Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the film has created a notable buzz.

Tatum portrays tech billionaire Slater King, who falls for cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) and invites her to his private island. What begins as a dream turns into a nightmare as Frida questions her reality. The ensemble cast includes Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, and Geena Davis. Kravitz not only directed but also co-wrote and produced the film. The film enjoys a solid 80% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and surprised audiences with an intense online marketing campaign.

The Crow

Lionsgate’s reboot of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård of It and John Wick: Chapter 4 fame, is projected to earn between $6M-$9M, less than the original 1994 Brandon Lee movie which opened at $11.7M. Scheduled to screen at 2,500 locations, the film is directed by Rupert Sanders and based on James O’Barr’s original graphic novel.

In the reboot, soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA twigs) face brutal murder due to Shelly’s past. With a chance to save his love by sacrificing himself, Eric seeks revenge on their killers, traversing between life and death to correct past wrongs. Produced by Edward R. Pressman, Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida, John Jencks, and Samuel Hadida, the movie’s release was moved from June 7 to accommodate Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Sony is releasing the faith-based film The Forge, directed by Alex Kendrick, in roughly 1,700 theaters. The film follows Isaiah, a high school graduate who receives motivation to make better life decisions.
