Russia Claims 158 Ukrainian Drones Downed, Including in Moscow Area

On September 1, the Russian military announced that it intercepted and destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones that targeted various parts of Russia, including two energy facilities. While local officials confirmed the incidents, Ukraine has yet to respond to these claims.

As reported by the Kiev Independent, the drones were reported to have struck several areas, including Tver, Voronezh, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk, Belgorod, Lipetsk, and Kursk. Fires ignited as a result of the attacks, notably at an oil refinery in Moscow and at the Konakovo power station situated in the Tver region, a significant energy producer in central Russia.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that at least nine drones were intercepted in the capital region, according to a report from TASS. He further confirmed that additional unidentified aerial vehicles (UAVs) attacking Moscow were downed in the Ramensky Municipal District.

Specific details emerged regarding a fire that erupted in a “separate technical room” at the oil refinery. This facility is operated by Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of the Russian energy giant Gazprom. Approximately 75 miles from Moscow, residents in the Tver region reported hearing explosions near the Konakovo power station.

Governor Igor Rudenya of the Tver region reported that a fire in the Konakovsky district, attributed to the drone attack, had been contained, although he did not disclose further details regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, video evidence circulating on social media has been corroborated by BBC Verify, showing explosions occurring at these targeted sites, indicative of the drone activity claimed by Russia.

In the backdrop of these events, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi of Ukraine stated that Ukraine currently controls over 500 square miles and has more than 100 settlements under its authority as of last Tuesday.
