Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly being “brought into the fold” on various fronts as Marvel Studios prepares to develop several of its biggest projects, including the next Avengers film. Marvel Studios and the Russos are currently in “talks” to direct those movies, but those discussions are in the “early stages.”

Joe and Anthony Russo have played an integral role in building the most successful films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: Civil War. In fact, three of the eight highest-grossing MCU films have been directed by the Russo Brothers. Despite their commercial success, the duo said they needed to take a break from the MCU until at least 2030 after Avengers: Endgame was released.

“We won’t be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade,” Joe Russo told Variety in 2022.

Instead, the duo has opted to develop films like 21 Bridges starring Chadwick Boseman and series like Prime Video’s Citadel. However, recent events within the MCU could bring the filmmakers back before they initially intended. The next Avengers film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was set to feature Kang The Conqueror, who was first introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, the actor who played Kang The Conqueror, Jonathan Majors, was cut off from the MCU due to his recent legal troubles and accusations of abuse. Not to mention, The Marvels didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office while Blade has had trouble getting off the ground in production.

In the meantime, Marvel will turn its attention to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine along with the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
