Third time was the charm for Ryan Gosling, whose third stint as host on NBC’s Saturday Night Live has landed him his first Emmy nomination in the Guest Actor In a Comedy Series category. This recognition follows closely on the heels of Gosling’s third Oscar nomination for Barbie.

Gosling’s Emmy-nominated SNL hosting gig on April 13 was especially remarkable. It featured a third installment of the “Close Encounters” sketch with former SNL cast member, and Gosling’s Barbie co-star, Kate McKinnon. Additionally, there was a memorable Gosling-Emily Blunt “Barbenheimer” musical number set to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well,” and the viral “Beavis & Butt-Head” sketch, which has garnered 17 million views on YouTube alone.

The success of that episode, particularly the standout “Beavis & Butthead” sketch, aided the long-standing NBC sketch program in securing multiple nominations for the Gosling-hosted show. Awards they are vying for include Directing For a Variety Show, Hairstyling For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program, Makeup For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program, and Music Direction.

Known for breaking character and causing other cast members to laugh in his previous two hosting appearances, Ryan Gosling stayed true to form during his third hosting gig. He laughed in nearly every skit he participated in, much to the audience’s delight and providing a fun challenge for his co-stars to keep straight faces.

The episode also featured musical guest Chris Stapleton and drew 8.9 million viewers within seven days, according to NBCUniversal. Among the 18 to 49 demographic, the episode has achieved a 2.0 rating. This made it the show’s largest seven-day audience since Billie Eilish hosted in December 2021, and its best demo performance since Dave Chappelle’s last hosting gig in November 2022.

In terms of streaming, the Gosling episode has claimed the title of the most-watched episode of Saturday Night Live ever on Peacock. Additionally, the skits from the episode have amassed over 56 million views on YouTube.

Also nominated for their hosting duties on SNL this past season are former cast members Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig.
