Ryan Murphy’s ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Trailer: Cruise Catastrophe, Shania Twain Cameo

“Doctor Odyssey,” an upcoming ABC drama by Ryan Murphy, has added a new face to its cast: Shania Twain. She joins actors Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson in the medical procedural set on a luxury cruise ship.

The announcement came through a new trailer showcasing the high-pressure environment aboard the ship. The series synopsis states, “Max (Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

In the trailer, Max is welcomed aboard the Odyssey by Captain Robert Massey (Johnson), who sets a promising yet daunting tone by saying, “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here. Keep these dreamers safe.”

The serene atmosphere quickly shifts as the Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is interrupted by eerier sound cues, hinting at the perilous situations to come. The scenes include a man collapsing beside the pool, two nurses (Soo and Teale) rushing with a stretcher, a woman convulsing in a hospital bed, and another woman watching someone fall overboard.

Shania Twain’s role is teased as Robert’s dance partner during a lively deck party.

Captain Robert’s voiceover continues, offering a metaphor for the coming challenges: “It’s not a question of when you encounter waves, but what you do when they come up.” A storm looms, magnifying the ship’s impending troubles as the crew prepares for impact. In a tense scene, Max encourages a rescued man in a lifeboat, telling him to “keep breathing.”
