Ryan Murphy’s FX Series Reveals NFL Star’s Murder Conviction

The trailer for FX’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” has been unveiled.

The 10-episode limited series premieres on FX with two episodes on Sept. 17 and follows the development and family background of the NFL football player Aaron Hernandez — and his violent crimes, murder conviction and death by suicide.

Josh Andrés Rivera (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” “West Side Story”) stars as Hernandez, who was drafted to the New England Patriots as a tight end in 2010 and played three seasons with the team. Before signing to the Patriots, he played football at the University of Florida. Patrick Schwarzenegger portrays Tim Tebow, Hernandez’s Florida Gators teammate and a rising NFL quarterback.

In the 2013 offseason, Hernandez was arrested and charged for the murder of Odin Lloyd. After being convicted, he died by suicide in prison in 2017.

The series, the first installment of sports anthology series “American Sports Story,” is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” from The Boston Globe and Wondery.

The series was developed by Stu Zicherman, who executive produces alongside Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Carl Franklin. Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy of Wondery executive produce, along with Linda Pizutti Henry and Ira Napoliello of the Boston Globe. The series is produced by 20th Television.

“American Sports Story” is a part of the “American Story” anthology series at FX, which includes “American Horror Story,” “American Horror Stories” and “American Crime Story.”
