Sabrina Carpenter Performs Sultry Jazz “Please, Please, Please” on ‘Tonight Show’

Sabrina Carpenter captivated audiences on Thursday night (August 22) with a dynamic performance on The Tonight Show . The former Disney Channel star performed a jazz rendition of her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, “Please Please Please,” transforming it into an unforgettable musical experience.

Channeling the sultry essence of Michelle Pfeiffer’s piano-top performance from 1989’s The Fabulous Baker Boys , Carpenter started her performance seated on top of a white grand piano. Using a bejeweled microphone and backed by three singers, as well as string and horn sections, she turned the upbeat pop song into a soulful torch melody.

Barefoot in a shimmering black gown with a plunging neckline, Carpenter brought drama and emotion to the stage. She stood and crawled across the piano, passionately delivering the song while adjusting the more explicit lyrics for network television. Her performance coincided with the release of her new album Short n’ Sweet, the follow-up to her 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send . The new album includes “Please” and another hit, “Espresso,” which reached the top 10 in April.

Earlier in the show, Carpenter joined fellow guest Zoë Kravitz in a comic sketch. The segment, known for its playful nature, featured Carpenter and Kravitz descending into the “EW!” basement in vibrant outfits. Playing characters named Lucy and Hailey, they engaged in lighthearted banter about school and friendship bracelets, drawing laughs and approval from the audience.

The playful segment highlighted their character’s quirks, from Kravitz’s exaggerated gum-chewing to their whimsical friendship bracelets. Kravitz’s bracelet read “nightowl” because of her late nights, while Carpenter’s read “Sweetie Pie” for her candy cravings. Fallon’s character added to the humor with a mermaid-themed bracelet labeled “Splash.”

The fun escalated as they performed a quirky “Espresso” dance but were humorously interrupted by Fallon’s character’s awkward stepdad, Gary, who tried to join the fun with his own version of “Kumbaya,” adding to the sketch’s comedy.

As usual, the sketch ended with a quick-fire round of “EW!” takes, humorously rejecting mullets, PopSockets, and Love Island while showing affection for Stanley Tucci and pink drinks.
