Sally Field Rejoins Social Media, Expresses New Hope for Kamala Harris

Norma Rae star Sally Field is once again joining the union of social media chaos.

Following presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ inspiring speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the 77-year-old Oscar-winning actress announced her return to public platforms, suggesting that restored hope and an urge to get people to vote prompted her to rejoin Instagram on Thursday night.

“Hope is here. Right in the room with me and my 18-year-old newly registered to vote grandson,” Field shared overnight alongside a photo of herself watching Harris’ speech with her family, while one of her Oscars sat on a shelf behind her. “I’m, screaming from the highest mountain top I can find. Vote for our country, our children and grandchildren. Vote for the earth and women and human rights. Vote for democracy. Vote for @kamalaharris and @timwalz. Please dear God. (And I’ll be your best friend.)”

In another post, Field posed with her dog, with the image’s caption explaining her reason for stepping back from social media in recent years.

“I’ve not been on social media. Not since it became public toilet paper for our former crook of a President,” Field wrote. “But ‘hope is making a comeback.’ So here I am. This is me. And this is my dog, Dash. Buckle up.”

Field’s son, Sam Greisman, helped his mother announce her social media return, with the producer and writer sharing his mom’s post to his Instagram Story with a short note.

“If you follow me I figure you probably care about this,” he wrote.

Field won her first of two career Oscars for playing the titular role in 1979’s Norma Rae, which followed a factory worker fighting for union rights. The film’s themes echo the actress’ political and social advocacy, as she has long used her platform to champion women’s rights.

In 2019, Field’s activism led to her arrest, after she participated in Jane Fonda’s ongoing climate change protests on the United States Capitol steps.
