Sam Burns’ 3-Word Tour Championship Roast of Scottie Scheffler Goes Viral

Scottie Scheffler is in the midst of a historic season. Scheffler clinched his second Masters title in April and secured victories in five other tournaments, including four Signature Events. He crowned his accomplishments with an Olympic Gold in Paris, demonstrating an extraordinary comeback. Now, he stands 36 holes away from winning his first Tour Championship on the PGA Tour.

His performance over the last two years is arguably the best stretch of golf since the prime of Tiger Woods. So, when his friend and fellow PGA Tour member Sam Burns had a rare chance to take a playful jab at Scheffler, he didn’t hold back.

During Friday’s round, Scheffler found himself in a fairway bunker on the 13th hole, facing a challenging second shot. Burns, one of Scheffler’s close friends, made an appearance with Smylie Kauffman on the broadcast and joked about Scottie’s predicament. “This guy’s terrible,” Burns quipped after Scheffler’s shot ended up in the greenside bunker, sending the onlookers into fits of laughter.

The moment quickly went viral, with various golf media outlets sharing the clip, amassing over a quarter-million views in just the first hour. Scheffler couldn’t recover from the tricky situation and eventually bogeyed the par-4 13th. Notably, this was only his first bogey of the round and his second for the tournament. He still holds a five-shot lead over Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa with a couple of holes to play.

Meanwhile, Burns posted an impressive 3-under 68, tying for sixth place at 11-under.

Scheffler came into the week with a two-shot lead over Morikawa, thanks to the unique structure and format of the Tour Championship, which employs staggered scoring. As the leading player in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings, Scheffler started the tournament at 10-under par. Schauffele was two strokes behind, and the rest of the field progressively further back.

After Thursday’s opening round, it seemed Scheffler was running away from the competition. He posted the lowest score of the day with a 6-under 65, stretching his lead to seven shots as Friday began. However, both Schauffele and Morikawa are putting up a fight, trimming the lead down to four strokes as they battle on.

This marks the third consecutive season that Scheffler has entered the Tour Championship in the lead. While he couldn’t close it out in his previous attempts, the way the Ridgewood, New Jersey native is playing right now suggests it will be tough for anyone to catch up to him this time.
