Sam Heughan explains the significance of Outlander Season 8

At one point, it appeared that “Outlander” Season 7 might be the series finale. Maril Davis confirmed this, indicating that the season had been crafted to potentially serve as the show’s conclusion. However, Starz decided to greenlight an eighth and final season, comprising 10 episodes.

Sam Heughan, who portrays Jamie Fraser, discussed the significance of this concluding season with “The Herald.” He emphasized the importance of delivering closure for fans, indicating that he had actively advocated for this final chapter.

Heughan insisted on a proper ending rather than leaving viewers with unresolved plotlines or cliffhangers that would leave them uncertain about the future. He aimed to ensure fans received a gratifying conclusion.

The need for closure is personal for Heughan as well. Having played Jamie Fraser for over a decade, he seeks to conclude this chapter of his career in a satisfying manner. Reflecting on his time on the show, Heughan admitted that adapting to life post-“Outlander” would be challenging, considering the consistent filming schedules and media appearances.

He noted that the series’ culmination might necessitate some form of therapy to transition from a role he has embodied for so long. The conclusion represents a significant shift for him, impacting his daily routine and professional life.

However, Heughan has cautioned fans that the series finale might not align perfectly with everyone’s expectations. He pointed out that the ending may not entirely satisfy his own desires. This is not a criticism of the writers, but rather a reflection of the timing. Diana Gabaldon has yet to complete the 10th book of the “Outlander” series, which would finish the original storyline.

Over time, the television adaptation has deviated slightly from the source material. Additionally, there is insufficient time for the show to cover all the events of Book 9 and the portions of Book 10 that Gabaldon has shared. Consequently, the show must craft its own conclusion based on the narrative it has developed over the years. Heughan has assured fans that the TV series will provide such a resolution.

So, while the upcoming ending of “Outlander” may not fulfill every fan’s wish, it promises to deliver a sense of closure. The audience eagerly anticipates the series finale, ready to see how the beloved story draws to an end.

“Outlander” Season 7B premieres on Friday, Nov. 22 on Starz.
