Sanders Lauds Harris’s Strong and Progressive Economic Agenda

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) praised Vice President Kamala Harris’s recently launched economic plan, commending the proposals as “strong” and “progressive.”

During an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Sanders expressed enthusiasm for Harris’s early campaign efforts, especially given that she has only been a candidate for three weeks. “I think she’s doing really, really well in a whole lot of ways,” said Sanders. He emphasized that what Harris unveiled is a robust progressive agenda.

Looking ahead, Sanders suggested that Harris will likely provide more detailed proposals in the coming weeks and months. “I think she’s going to add more specificity to some of these proposals, and she’s going to add to it,” he remarked.

Harris, who ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket last month after President Biden exited the race, rolled out her economic plan during a campaign event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Analysts indicate that the proposals could carry an estimated price tag of up to $1.7 trillion. The agenda includes initiatives aimed at cutting taxes, increasing housing construction, and implementing a federal ban on price gouging.

Her campaign clarified that this announcement is just a portion of her broader economic platform. If elected, the proposals will be prioritized during her first 100 days in office.

Sanders, who contended against both Biden and Harris in the previous election cycle, expressed support for the policy directions that Harris has proposed. He stated, “I have always believed that good policy is good politics,” highlighting her intention to address the pressing issue of prescription drug costs. He noted that this approach is immensely popular among voters.

Sanders’s advocacy extends beyond housing; he also supports tackling medical debt and controlling grocery prices. While he has yet to formally endorse Harris, he is keen to influence the direction of her campaign, similar to his historical role in shaping Biden’s focus during the 2020 election.

Earlier in the month, Sanders advised Harris to take pride in the achievements of the Biden administration. Following Biden’s departure from the race, he noted that Harris could only secure victory against former President Trump by addressing the concerns of working-class individuals who feel neglected.

Recently, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), who received Sanders’s backing during the vice-presidential selection process, were certified as the Democratic nominees for the upcoming presidential election. They are scheduled to officially accept their nomination next week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

With less than three months remaining until the election, the vice president has gained significant momentum in the polls—especially within key swing states. Additionally, she has garnered an increasing number of endorsements and reported record-breaking fundraising efforts, all of which contribute to her rising profile in the race.
