Savannah Guthrie Leaves Today Show Studio Days After Returning to Work

Savannah Guthrie (NBC)

Savannah Guthrie had just returned to work on Monday following a summer break spent with her family. But by Wednesday, she stepped away from the “Today Show” studios for a crucial assignment.

On August 21, instead of sitting next to Hoda Kotb at the renowned news desk, Guthrie reported live from Chicago, having flown there overnight.

She was covering the latest Democratic National Rally, featuring speeches from notable figures like Barack and Michelle Obama in support of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Later in the broadcast, Craig Melvin joined Hoda at the desk while Guthrie continued her reports from Chicago.

Savannah had spent the previous week at her home in Upstate New York, enjoying quality time with her children and husband, Michael Feldman.

During her time off, they celebrated her daughter Vale’s tenth birthday. Guthrie shared several photos from the festivities on social media.

The journalist is accustomed to traveling for work, often taking overnight flights to cover events both domestically and internationally.

Guthrie has been with “Today” since July 2012. In 2022, she celebrated a decade on the show with a surprise visit from her family during a special anniversary episode.

Her path to journalism was notably daring. Originally set on becoming a lawyer, she eventually realized her true calling was in broadcasting.

Explaining her journey on Brooke Shields’ podcast, “Now What?”, Guthrie said, “I was in a medium market and felt like I wasn’t good enough to reach the big market. I dreaded the process of sending out tapes and dealing with rejection.”

She added, “I took the LSAT as a backup plan. My plan B was to apply for law school if I couldn’t land a job in a bigger market.”

Guthrie got into law school and secured a good job at a law firm. Yet, she felt it wasn’t her destiny.

Recalling the moment she quit to follow her dreams, she said, “I called the judge, which never happens. You don’t quit a clerkship before it starts, but I did.”

“I explained that I had this dream, but I didn’t have a job offer or any leads,” she said. The judge advised her to go through with the clerkship first, but she declined, knowing she might never take the leap otherwise.

She continued, “The judge understood and said, ‘if it’s your dream, go for it.’ So, I did.”

The rest is history. Guthrie is now one of the most well-known broadcasters in the United States, thanks to her tenure on the “Today Show”.

In addition to her broadcasting career, she is also an accomplished writer, having published her latest book, “Mostly What God Does,” earlier this year.
