Savannah Guthrie Shares Behind-the-Scenes of DNC Amid Today Show Absence

Savannah Guthrie has departed New York City for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. On Thursday, August 22, she gave fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at her new role at the DNC.

The news anchor has been reporting live from the convention and joined Hoda Kotb, who remained in the studio, on Thursday morning to share rare insights and let “Today Show” viewers know what to expect from the evening’s event.

Savannah was stationed stage right, near the podium where the DNC leadership, timekeepers, and others sit. She even provided a glimpse into the backstage area where guest presenters wait before going on stage. She humorously mentioned that there had been a “log jam” the previous night because former President Bill Clinton spoke for over 30 minutes, which was 15 minutes longer than his allocated time.

The “Today Show” star showcased thousands of red, white, and blue balloons suspended in nets on the ceiling, set to drop when Kamala Harris accepts the nomination. She also pointed out a snack basket filled with Chips Ahoy and Doritos to keep the event staff energized.

The 2024 DNC has already featured powerful speeches from former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, former President Barack Obama, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and the 2024 Vice President nominee, Tim Walz.

Thursday’s event will include speeches from Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

The Chicks are set to perform the national anthem, and reports indicate that Pink will deliver an energetic performance shortly before Kamala Harris accepts the nomination, 74 days ahead of election day.

Savannah’s absence from the studio comes after taking the previous week off to spend time with her family before her children return to school.

Her eldest daughter Vale recently celebrated her 11th birthday, and the TV star took to Instagram to pay tribute to her daughter, sharing numerous photos of them together over the years.

In the caption, she lovingly wrote: “Ten years of this magical girl – my whole heart and soul. Happy birthday dearest Vale!”

Savannah has enjoyed a fulfilling summer with her family. She is also a mom to seven-year-old son Charles, whom she shares with her husband Michael Feldman. The family even traveled to France to watch the Paris Olympics, which Savannah co-hosted for NBC along with her “Today Show” co-stars.
