Scrapped Emotion Revealed in Deleted Scene from Inside Out 2

The first deleted scene from Inside Out 2 introduces a new emotion: Shame.

A video from Entertainment Weekly showcases director Kelsey Mann discussing this deleted scene and includes some sketches. The scene was meant to occur near the end of the movie, featuring Riley playing “Never Have I Ever.”

“In this version, you’ll see Anxiety and Shame together,” Mann explained. “They’re kind of a pair in this one. We became intrigued by the idea of Riley’s shame spiraling out of control, creating a storm. Although an element of this remains in the final film, the focus was shifted from shame to anxiety.”

“This change simplified the storyline and allowed us to concentrate on one character—Anxiety—instead of splitting the focus between Anxiety and Shame,” he added.

The sketches depict a group of kids playing “Never Have I Ever” while recorded dialogues discuss topics like shoplifting, playing hooky, cheating on a math test, and stealing a credit card.

Inside Riley’s mind, emotions are alarmed that high schooler Valentina thinks Grace is “cool,” triggering a massive fight among Riley and her friends. The altercation peaks when Grace reveals Riley’s crush on a video game character, causing Riley to feel embarrassed as her shame takes over.

Inside Out 2 is the much-anticipated sequel to Pixar’s 2015 film. The storyline picks up a few years later as Riley transitions into her teenage years, grappling with new emotions that accompany this period.

Riley attends a weekend hockey camp with her two best friends, Grace (Grace Lu) and Bree (Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green). However, upon discovering that her friends will attend a different high school, Riley faces a difficult decision. Should she remain loyal to her friends, or focus on impressing the high schoolers?

Meanwhile, Riley’s emotions experience upheaval with the emergence of new ones. Anxiety (Maya Hawke) takes the lead, joined by Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).

Anxiety tries to dominate Riley’s actions in Inside Out 2, sidelining the original emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Disgust (Liza Lapira), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).

The film has achieved monumental success at the box office, amassing over $1.6 billion globally and becoming the top-grossing movie of 2024. It joins the ranks of other Disney hits like Deadpool and Wolverine, which also surpassed the $1 billion mark. Despicable Me 4 ($848 million) and Dune: Part Two ($711 million) weren’t far behind.

Domestically, Inside Out 2 leads the box office with $642 million in earnings. Deadpool and Wolverine holds second place with $546 million in its run so far.

Even though Shame didn’t make the cut in Inside Out 2, the film’s box office triumph paves the way for future sequels. Perhaps in the next installment, Shame can be fully introduced into the storyline.
