Screenwriter Reacts to Blake Lively’s Claim Ryan Reynolds Wrote Film Scene

Blake Lively recently disclosed an interesting tidbit about her latest film, “It Ends With Us.” While talking to E! News on the red carpet at the movie’s premiere in New York, Lively revealed that her husband, Ryan Reynolds, contributed to writing an “iconic rooftop scene” in the film. This revelation came as a surprise even to Christy Hall, the movie’s screenwriter.

In “It Ends With Us,” Lively plays the role of Lily Bloom, and she also serves as a producer for the film, which is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling 2016 novel. Lively and Reynolds frequently collaborate on their projects. She mentioned, “We help each other, we work together so much,” and continued to share that Reynolds wrote the rooftop scene, a fact known to very few until now. “He wrote it, he works on everything I do, I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations, are mine, and mine are his. I mean, he’s all over this film,” Lively added.

This revelation was news to Christy Hall. In a conversation with People magazine, Hall expressed her surprise and amusement, “There were a couple of little things that I thought had been improvised. Like when he says, ‘Pretty please with a cherry on top,’ and she talks about the maraschino cherries. When I saw a cut, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cute. That must have been a cute improvised thing.’ So if I’m being told that Ryan wrote that, then great, how wonderful.” Hall appreciated that the final version of the scene preserved the essential moments she intended to highlight from the book. She acknowledged, “There were a few little flourishes that I did not write, but I assumed that they had been improvised on set. But, again, like I said, the moments that I felt like needed to be honored are there. So I recognize the scene and I’m proud of the scene. And if those flourishes came from Ryan, I think that’s wonderful.”

Reflecting on the challenges of adapting the book’s scenes, Hall told The Hollywood Reporter that the rooftop scene was particularly difficult for her to write, as it was impeccably penned by Hoover in the novel. Despite these challenges, the collaboration seems to have resulted in a scene that both maintains the essence of the book and infuses a unique touch contributed by Reynolds.

The promotional activities for “It Ends With Us” have generated significant online buzz, including discussions about Lively’s fashion choices. The “Gossip Girl” star caught everyone’s eye at the premiere with her attire, choosing to wear the same Versace gown that Britney Spears famously wore in 2002. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lively explained the motivation behind her choice, saying, “As a millennial girl, you watch Britney, [she] was the ultimate reason you wanted to sparkle and shine.”

Lively’s candid revelations and her nostalgic fashion choice have added an intriguing flair to the film’s promotional campaign. Such personal insights from the stars involved have undoubtedly created additional interest in the movie, highlighting both the collaborative efforts behind the scenes and the personal influences that shape their work. As “It Ends With Us” continues its journey from page to screen, these behind-the-scenes details offer fans a richer understanding of the film’s creation process.
