Sean Bean’s Movie & TV Death Count

Sean Bean is one of those actors known for frequently meeting his demise on-screen, a reputation that solidified with his role in “Fellowship of the Ring.” His career post-“Lord of the Rings” continued this trend, with multiple films featuring his characters’ deaths. In the 2002 film “Equilibrium,” Bean’s character is shot. He later appeared in Michael Bay’s “The Island,” where his character dies by hanging. Surprisingly, Bean’s role in 2004’s “National Treasure,” where he plays a key villain, does not end in death.

Interestingly, many of Bean’s well-known roles in major 2000s films such as “Troy,” “Silent Hill,” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” do not see his characters meeting their end. By that time, he was a significant supporting actor in blockbusters, and it was primarily in smaller productions like the 2007 independent film “Far North” where his characters continued to die.

In 2011, HBO premiered the monumental fantasy series “Game of Thrones” to widespread acclaim. In the series, Bean’s character, Ned Stark, is initially positioned as a leading figure. For viewers unfamiliar with the source material, Ned Stark’s brutal decapitation was a shocking twist and one of the series’ first major character deaths — and arguably one of Bean’s most memorable. Despite the prevalence of death in “Game of Thrones,” Bean did not offer any advice to his co-stars about dying on-screen, even though his filmography shows he has quite a bit of experience with it.
