Selena Gomez Says She Can’t Have Kids but Is Hopeful About Family

Selena Gomez has shared her plans to become a mother by the age of 35, indicating that she may utilize surrogacy or adoption to fulfill her desire for a family. In a candid interview for the October cover story of Vanity Fair, the 32-year-old actor, singer, and beauty brand executive revealed a personal challenge regarding motherhood.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez disclosed. She explained that she has several medical issues that could jeopardize both her life and that of a baby, an emotional reality that she has had to come to terms with. “That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she added.

Gomez’s career continues to flourish. Recently, she received her first Emmy nomination in an acting category for her role as Mabel Mora in the Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building.” She is also set to appear in the Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez,” alongside Zoe Saldana, which is anticipated to hit select theaters and Netflix in November.

Reflecting on her family planning, Gomez admitted that it is not what she had initially envisioned. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that,” she said. She expressed gratitude for individuals who are willing to consider surrogacy or adoption, viewing these options as significant possibilities for her future family.

Before her current relationship with renowned producer Benny Blanco, Gomez spent five years being single. During this time, she took a step back to assess her priorities and contemplate how to eventually start her own family.

In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez discussed her struggles with pregnancy, stating that her bipolar medications could make it unlikely for her to carry a child. She recognized that this was an important aspect of her life, saying, “That’s a very big, big, present thing in my life. … However I’m meant to have them [children], I will.”

Gomez has openly discussed her mental health challenges. Throughout her twenties, she sought treatment at four different facilities, culminating in a diagnosis of bipolar disorder after experiencing a psychotic episode in 2019. Reflecting on her early twenties, Gomez remarked, “I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.” She added that her condition serves as a humbling presence in her life, even if it surfaces in challenging ways.

Aside from her mental health struggles, Gomez also faces the effects of lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant due to complications arising from this condition. Despite her health challenges, the recent winner of the lead actress award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival remains optimistic and excited about her future.

As she looks ahead, Gomez expresses enthusiasm about her unique journey toward motherhood. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she said.
