Selena Gomez’s Response to Cosmetic Surgery Rumors

Published: 8:56 PM PDT, July 28, 2024

Selena Gomez is once again addressing and dismissing speculation about undergoing cosmetic surgery.

The 32-year-old singer, who has denied plastic surgery rumors for years, was active on TikTok over the weekend. She interacted with a video in which content creator Marissa Barrionuevo, a physician assistant in a plastic surgery office, discussed the cosmetic work celebrities might have had done. Barrionuevo shared side-by-side photos of Gomez but refrained from commenting on any potential surgeries, noting Gomez’s health struggles with lupus as a reason for significant changes in her appearance. On Saturday, Gomez took to the comments to express her frustration.

“Honestly I hate this,” the Only Murders in the Building star wrote. “I was on stripes because of flare-up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.”

In response, Barrionuevo created a new video apologizing for any negative feelings caused by her original post. “I adore you,” Barrionuevo said. “I really do mean the best, so I apologize if this rubbed you the wrong way in any way whatsoever.”

She also added a caption to the video, stating, “Although I always try to lead with grace and mindfulness, I am sorry this upset you (and I understand why it did). I decided to stop making videos like this last year because of the negative impact it can cause. It was never my intention.”

Fortunately, Gomez, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and received a kidney transplant in 2017 due to the diagnosis, responded in the comments and reassured Barrionuevo that they are all good. “I love you,” Gomez commented. “Not about you. I just get sad sometimes.”

Back in 2019, Gomez opened up about the internal and external challenges she has faced after gaining weight as a side effect of her diagnosis and the medications she was prescribed. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue and organs.

“I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” Gomez said during a previous podcast appearance. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

More recently, in 2023, she took to social media to respond to internet bullies who mocked her appearance at the Golden Globes.

“I tend to hold a lot of water weight and that happens very normally, and then, when I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight,” Gomez explained about the fluctuations she experiences due to her medication.

“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful,” she continued. “And yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe they are what helps me.”
