As Selena’s fans commemorate the 30th anniversary of her chart-topping album Amor Prohibido, the remastered edition of the album makes a historic debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart, dated July 20. Released through Capitol Latin/UMLE, it is the second Latin album in 2024 to achieve this milestone, following Kali Uchis’ Orquídeas in January.

Amor Prohibido rockets to No. 1 on Vinyl Albums, marking Selena’s second time at the top of the 13-year-old tally. This follows the success of her album Ones, which claimed the No. 1 spot for a week in 2020.

The remastered Amor Prohibido sold 10,000 vinyl copies in the U.S. from July 5-11, according to Luminate, almost doubling Selena’s previous best week in vinyl sales when Ones sold 6,000 copies in 2020. That surge led Ones to re-enter the chart at No. 1, making it the first Latin album to top the Vinyl Albums chart since its inception in January 2011.

The new remastered version of Amor Prohibido has been pressed on four vinyl variants: a standard clear color edition, a Target-exclusive pink color version with a poster, a Spotify-exclusive coke bottle clear edition, and a picture-disc variant available on Selena’s webstore.

Additionally, the remastered album has been released on CD, cassette (exclusive to Selena’s webstore), and as a digital download. For tracking and charting purposes, all versions, both old and new, are combined. The 2024 editions of the album retain the original 10-song tracklist from the 1994 release.

In total, Amor Prohibido is only the fourth Latin album to ever reach No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, which has seen 499 different albums top its list. This places it alongside Selena’s Ones (one week, July 2020), Bad Bunny’s Anniversary Trilogy (one week, January 2022), and Kali Uchis’ Orquídeas (one week, January 2024). Uchis also had another No. 1 album on the Vinyl Albums chart with her English-language set, Red Moon In Venus, in March 2023.

In addition to debuting at No. 1 on Vinyl Albums with 10,000 copies sold, Amor Prohibido re-enters the Top Album Sales chart at No. 4 with 11,000 copies sold across all formats. The album also jumps 47-5 on the Top Latin Albums chart and 21-4 on Regional Mexican Albums, with 13,000 equivalent album units earned during the same period, 2,000 of which stem from streaming activity. This equates to 3.54 million on-demand streams of the album’s 10 tracks.

Back in 1994, Amor Prohibido became the first Tejano album to reach No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, where it spent 20 weeks at the top. It was the second album to dominate the young chart, which launched in July 1993, following Gloria Estefan’s Mi Tierra, which ruled for 58 weeks between July 1993 and June 1994.

Three tracks from the album made it to No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart in 1994: “Amor Prohibido” (nine weeks), “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” (four weeks), and “No Me Queda Más” (seven weeks).
