Sequel Announced for ‘The Devil Wears Prada’

The Devil Wears Prada may don Prada once again with a sequel in the works.

(Obviously, they’ll need to tweak the title.)

According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney is developing a follow-up to the hit 2006 film, which was based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel. Reports indicate that all major stars from the first film, including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, along with director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman, are in talks to return. A source close to the production revealed to EW that original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is also working on the new screenplay.

The original novel and film centered on a ruthless editor, played by Streep, at an influential fashion magazine, and her complex relationship with her new assistant, played by Hathaway. Streep’s character was clearly inspired by Anna Wintour, the longtime editor of Vogue. (Weisberger was a former assistant to Wintour before she penned the original novel.)

Weisberger wrote her own sequel, a book titled Revenge Wears Prada, in 2013. At that time, both Hathaway and Streep were asked whether they would be interested in adapting it into a movie, but they weren’t interested back then. However, a decade later, it seems their stance has changed.

Additionally, ten years later, a musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada has been making its rounds globally. Announced in 2017 with music by Elton John, the show had its first staging in Chicago in 2022. The musical has now made its preview debut in London, featuring Vanessa Williams in the role originally played by Streep.
