Sequel to Alligator Thriller in Development

Get ready to fear the water once again! Paramount Pictures is working on a sequel to the hit alligator thriller Crawl. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is already hard at work on developing Crawl 2, aiming to start shooting the film in Europe this fall. Alexandre Aja, the director of the first film, is back on board for the sequel. Additionally, Craig Flores and Sam Raimi will return as producers. The script is being penned by Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, known for their work on Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Project Almanac. Although no release date for the film has been revealed yet, anticipation is already building.

The original Crawl was written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen and featured Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper in the lead roles. However, the sequel is set to introduce a brand new cast. Sources suggest that Crawl 2 will also shift its setting from the swamps of Florida to the urban landscape of New York City. The original film followed Haley (Scodelario) and her father Dave (Pepper) attempting to survive a hurricane in Florida while being trapped in their house with a deadly alligator. As the story unfolded, multiple alligators posed a threat, and no help was in sight.

Haley managed to survive the ordeal, but it seems the sequel will focus on a different group of characters. In a previous interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Book Crew Podcast, Alexandre Aja discussed the potential of further exploring Haley’s character or telling a new story. “I think the story of Haley is a really strong one, but I believe that Crawl is about nature taking back its due, and kind of like… more hurricane-driven, man versus animal. So maybe it will be another story altogether… We’re looking for that human story right now, that will be as strong as the one in the first one. To make the second one legit,” Aja explained.

Made on a modest budget of under $14 million, Crawl more than doubled its investment by bringing in $91.5 million at the box office. Horror films have consistently been among the most profitable genres in recent years, and Crawl 2 has the potential to surpass the original’s success, depending on how well it’s received. If it turns out to be profitable once again, we might witness the advent of more anthology-style Crawl films similar to other successful franchises like Paranormal Activity and Final Destination. Only time will tell.
