Serena Williams Roasts LeBron James’ Hairline at ESPYs

Although Serena Williams is not a comedian or entertainer, her turn as ESPYs host was highly anticipated by many. Those who have admired the tennis icon throughout her 17-year career were eager to see the 23-time major champion back in the spotlight. Still, no one knew exactly what to expect.

Comedy is an art that’s difficult to master, so sticking to classic material can be a smart move. However, it’s important to add a fresh twist to avoid clichés. Williams seemed aware of this when she took aim at LeBron James, using his son and Los Angeles Lakers teammate Bronny James to set up a joke that the four-time NBA champion is all too familiar with.

“I truly hope Bronny has a long career,” Williams began, according to The Tennis Letter. “So long that he will see his hairline recede. Then miraculously un-recede… like dad.” The Saginaw, Michigan native has delivered many powerful shots in her life, but that one was a bit unexpected.

It’s rare for one legendary athlete to roast another, as most stars usually maintain friendly relations. James, however, is not above taking a jab at the ESPYs, knowing that such events thrive on humor. While Serena’s joke may not have floored anyone, it carried a nostalgic punch, reminding people just how long LeBron James has been a prominent figure.

His hairline became a popular topic about a decade ago, puzzling many fans. With him now witnessing his son getting drafted to the same team he plays for, it made sense for Williams to revisit this material.

When someone is as scrutinized as James, any change in physical appearance is bound to attract jokes and reactions. He can’t easily escape the limelight. Other comedians like Kevin Hart have also used James’ hairline as a punchline, so it’s unlikely that Serena Williams’ joke fazed him.

Serena, who is a 2024 inductee into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, touched on a few other prominent figures during her hosting duties, including Drake, Caitlin Clark, and Pat McAfee. She ensured a feminist theme ran through the proceedings and even took a jab at Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker for controversial remarks he made in May.

The joke about LeBron James, however, is likely to garner considerable attention online, as he remains a central topic of discussion. One would assume there are no hard feelings between the two megastars. But perhaps James has a retort ready for when the time is right.
