Shannen Doherty Finalized Divorce a Day Before Passing

In the days leading up to her death, actor Shannen Doherty and her ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko were finalizing their divorce. Court documents obtained by People reveal that Doherty agreed to a “default or uncontested dissolution” of the marriage on July 12, just one day before she passed away from breast cancer.

The legal paperwork indicates that the couple managed to settle their divorce proceedings, including the division of their property and any spousal support issues, out of court. Additionally, Doherty filed to waive spousal support on July 12. Iswarienko signed these documents the following day, which coincidentally was the same day Doherty died.

Doherty and Iswarienko had been married for 11 years before Doherty filed for divorce in April 2023. On her podcast, Doherty disclosed that she discovered her husband’s two-year affair just before she underwent brain surgery for her cancer. This revelation significantly impacted her decision to end their marriage.

The months leading up to Doherty’s death saw an increasingly bitter divorce battle. Earlier court documents show Doherty alleging that Iswarienko was prolonging the divorce proceedings “in hopes that I die before he is required to pay me [spousal support],” according to People.

Doherty’s death follows less than a month after she began a new round of chemotherapy treatment. She kept her fans updated on her health and divorce through her podcast, sharing her fears and uncertainties. “I just feel like my life has been unknown for over a year now, between divorce and cancer,” she confessed.

Shannen Doherty was a well-known actor, recognized for her roles in Little House on the Prairie, Charmed, and 90210. As a teenager in the ’80s, she appeared in films like Heathers, Night Shift, and Girls Just Want to Have Fun.

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Though her cancer initially went into remission, it returned in 2017 as Stage IV and eventually spread to her brain. Shannen Doherty passed away on July 13 at the age of 53.
