Shocking Update for Season 2 of Star Wars Series

Lucasfilm and Disney+ have decided not to proceed with a second season of “Star Wars: The Acolyte.”

According to Deadline, this decision comes just a few weeks after the first season concluded. While critics generally gave favorable reviews, the Star Wars fanbase did not warm up to it as much, leading to a drop in viewership as the series progressed. Notably, the two-episode premiere, which aired on June 4, amassed 4.8 million views, marking the biggest series premiere on Disney+ in 2024. After five days, this number rose to 11.1 million views. During the second weekend, “The Acolyte” held a No. 7 ranking on the Nielsen Top 10 originals chart and eventually climbed one spot higher the following week.

However, the third episode did not maintain this momentum, falling out of the Top 10 chart. It re-entered the chart during its finale week, albeit in the tenth spot, with a reported 335 million minutes streamed. This was notably low for a Star Wars series finale.

“Star Wars: The Acolyte” was created by Lesly Headland, best known for co-creating “Russian Doll” alongside Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. Headland made her feature film debut with “Bachelorette” in 2012 and later wrote the script for “About Last Night” in 2014, starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, and Regina Hall. In 2015, she directed “Sleeping with Other People.”

The series is set toward the end of the High Republic era, approximately a century before the events of “The Phantom Menace.” It follows a Jedi Master who investigates a series of crimes, taking viewers through various twists and turns.

Amandla Stenberg stars in dual roles as Osha and Mae Aniseya, twin sisters separated at birth. Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Carrie-Anne Moss also feature prominently in the series.

While “The Acolyte” will not continue, other Star Wars projects remain in development. “Andor” will get a second season after its first season premiered on September 21, 2022. “The Mandalorian,” another fan-favorite series, currently has three seasons with a likely fourth on the way.

In addition to these series, the Star Wars franchise is also set to make a significant return to the big screen. “The Mandalorian” and Grogu will feature in a movie slated for release on May 22, 2026, with Jon Favreau returning as director.

Furthermore, Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in an upcoming Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. This marks Ridley’s first appearance as Rey since 2019’s “Rise of Skywalker.”

Other films from acclaimed directors James Mangold and Dave Filoni are also in the works. Mangold is recognized for his films such as “Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “Ford v Ferrari,” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Filoni gained notable fame for his involvement in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and subsequently created the follow-up series, “Rebels.”
