The Television Critics Association (TCA) has recognized “Shōgun” in a big way. The FX drama stood out at the TCA awards on Friday night, securing four wins and establishing itself as a favorite among critics.

“Shōgun,” created by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Drama, Outstanding New Program, and the prestigious Program of the Year. Additionally, Anna Sawai won Individual Achievement in Drama for her performance as Toda Mariko. These accolades made FX the evening’s most celebrated network.

HBO and Max followed closely behind FX, each taking home two awards. Their comedy series “Hacks” received Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Jean Smart, who stars as Deborah Vance, won Individual Achievement in Comedy.

Disney+ had a strong showing in the children’s and family programming categories. “Bluey” was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Programming, while “Doctor Who” won Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming. Netflix also saw success with “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA” earning Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk, or Sketch, and “Baby Reindeer” winning Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, or Specials.

Other notable winners included ID’s documentary series “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in News and Information. Peacock’s reality series “The Traitors” won Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming.

TCA president Jacqueline Cutler reflected on the diversity and quality of television over the past year. “It was a year of brilliant television, from an epic historical drama to a harrowing documentary,” she stated. “We’re thrilled to honor all who created these shows, often against great odds, as many were worked on during the pandemic and interrupted by strikes. Congratulations to all of the winners.”

The TCA also honored the late Andre Braugher with the Career Achievement award, acknowledging his lasting impact on Hollywood and the TV industry. “Twin Peaks” received the Heritage Award, given to series that have had a significant and enduring influence.

These winners were selected by over 230 professional television journalists from the United States and Canada who make up the TCA’s membership.

Anna Sawai’s outstanding portrayal of Toda Mariko in “Shōgun” was recognized, further establishing her as a standout talent. Her performance in the FX drama was a highlight of the evening.
