‘Shogun’ Sweeps 2024 TV Critics Association Awards

FX’s Shōgun emerged as the standout winner at the 40th Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards held on Friday. The drama series, set against the backdrop of feudal Japan, garnered four top honors, including the coveted Program of the Year award.

In addition to winning Program of the Year, Shōgun was also recognized with awards for Best Drama and Best New Program. Actress Anna Sawai earned the Individual Achievement in Drama award for her compelling portrayal of Toda Mariko in the series. The show is expected to continue its winning streak at the upcoming Emmy Awards, with nominations set to be announced on Wednesday.

Max’s Hacks also had a noteworthy evening, securing two awards. The series won for Achievement in Comedy, and its leading star, Jean Smart, received the Individual Achievement in Comedy award. This marks Smart’s second win in the same category; she was previously honored for her performance in the show’s first season in 2021.

Other notable winners at the TCA Awards included Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which took home the award for Miniseries, Movies, and Specials. The beloved Doctor Who series won in the Family Programming category, while Bluey was awarded for Children’s Programming. The award for Reality Programming went to Peacock’s The Traitors, and ID’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV won for News and Information.

The ceremony was hosted by Wendi McLendon-Covey, known for her roles in The Goldbergs and NBC’s upcoming St. Denis Medical. It was the first in-person TCA Awards ceremony since 2019, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

In addition to the competitive categories, the TCA posthumously honored actor Andre Braugher with the Career Achievement Award. The prestigious Heritage Award, which recognizes a program that has had a lasting influence on television, was given to Twin Peaks.
