Showrunner of ‘Fire Country’ reveals if Morena Baccarin returns for Season 3

Fans of Fire Country are eager to learn more about the upcoming third season, especially regarding the return of Mickey Fox before her spinoff. Here’s what we know!

After establishing itself as one of CBS’s biggest new hits in 2022, Fire Country, like all network shows, was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. The show returned in February 2024 with a new season, quickly building on season 1’s plots.

With the show’s success, CBS naturally moved to plan a spinoff. They used the classic introductory episode with “Alert the Sheriff,” which featured a Three Rock inmate skipping camp after a drug cartel’s helicopter dropped several thousand dollars in cash on the area. This event brought in the local Sheriff’s department, including Sheriff’s Sergeant Mickey Fox, who happens to be the younger stepsister of Sharon (Diane Farr) and the aunt of Bode (Max Thieriot).

Mickey’s boss was killed, seemingly by that fugitive, but it turned out to be a corrupt cop. The episode focused on Mickey and Sharon overcoming past issues. Mickey was the one who arrested Bode as a teen, and she was ready to take up command as sheriff.

Playing the role of Mickey is Morena Baccarin, a TV veteran known for her roles in the cult sci-fi series Firefly, the Emmy-winning Showtime drama Homeland, and Fox’s wild Batman show Gotham. She’s set to play Mickey as the lead in the spinoff Sheriff Country, which will premiere in 2025. The question remains: will fans see Mickey on the main Fire Country show first?

Speaking to TVLine to promote season 3, showrunner Tia Napolitano confirmed that the show will pick up right where season 2 left off and will answer whether Gabriela went through with her wedding to Diego:

“We are doing a direct pickup, so everyone’s going to get all the answers that they were itching for at the end of our season 2 finale.”

Napolitano also confirmed that Mickey will make an appearance sometime in season 3, though she didn’t share details on when or how. It’s likely the episode will serve as another setup for Sheriff Country and will once again explore the Mickey-Sharon dynamic. A significant part of Mickey’s first episode was her judgmental stance on Sharon raising Bode and her determination not to make the same mistakes with her daughter, Skye.

During an argument, Mickey confessed that Skye was now in rehab. She highlighted the irony that despite her efforts to raise her right, Skye fell apart, while Bode managed to turn his life around. This revelation helped the sisters bond more.

Baccarin is a talented actress who fits Mickey well, and it makes sense that the writers want to give her another showcase before she transitions to her own show. It’s also probable that the two series will feature some crossover episodes to maintain their momentum.

Thus, Fire Country fans can be assured that we will see Mickey on the main series, as well as in her spinoff, continuing the storyline of this intriguing new character.

Fire Country season 3 premieres Friday, October 18 at 8/7c on CBS.
