Sierra Ferrell Delivers Amazing Cover of Wanda Jackson’s “Funnel of Love”

Sierra Ferrell is an old soul in a young body. Once again, she has impressed us with a stellar cover, proving she can tackle any genre and any era of music. We’ve seen her cover The Beatles, Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson,” and classics like “Neon Moon.” She can honestly do it all.

In February, Ferrell teamed up with Mirror Mirror Network to step back in time and deliver some fantastic covers from the ’60s. Given it was the month of love, Sam Cooke’s “Cupid” was a perfect choice. Today, they released another amazing cover from that session, with Ferrell putting on her rock and roll hat to lay down a stellar rendition of Wanda Jackson’s “Funnel Of Love.”

Wanda Jackson was an essential part of the ’60s music movement. She sang everything from gospel to country but was most famous as the Queen of Rockabilly, one of the first women to blend elements of country music with rock. The single from 1961 was written by Charles McCoy and Ken Westbury and was released as the B-side to Jackson’s first major pop-country hit, “Right or Wrong.”

While “Right or Wrong” is probably more recognizable to country fans, many consider “Funnel Of Love” to be Jackson’s best vocal performance. The track contrasts the airy and smooth twangs of “Right or Wrong” with gritty and raspy vocals paired with a surf rock melody, showcasing Jackson’s dynamic sound as an artist.

Interestingly, Ferrell once mentioned to Whiskey Riff that her dream project was to make a surf rock record. Judging by her take on “Funnel Of Love,” more of Ferrell singing this style would indeed be a treat. She accompanies herself on a saw in the track, adding a whimsical feel that aligns well with her other works like “The Sea.”

Ferrell gives her best Jackson impersonation, amplifying the rasp in the first lines of each verse but dialing it back and injecting her signature style in the remaining lyrics and chorus. While delivering the lyrics, Ferrell seems to be barely trying, not having to strain for the wide vocal range demanded by the track.

Mirror Mirror Network nailed it on their social media post promoting the cover: “There’s something special about this lil lady right here… but you didn’t need us to tell you that, now did you?”

How fortunate we are to live in the era of Sierra Ferrell. She is truly a one-of-a-kind talent.
