Simon Cowell Comments on Carrie Underwood’s ‘American Idol’ Return

Carrie Underwood is making a highly-anticipated return to American Idol, and the show’s original judge, Simon Cowell, is weighing in on the news. Underwood, who launched her career by winning Season 4 of the then-Fox singing competition back in 2005, has since become a major star in the country music scene and remains one of the most successful alumni of the show. Now, she is set to join the judges’ panel alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

Simon Cowell, who served as a judge during Underwood’s triumphant season, shared his thoughts on her new role with E! News. “I think it’s a good choice,” remarked Cowell, who is also known for his role on America’s Got Talent. “Carrie, we go back a long way. I remember her audition like it was yesterday. She was so good, she’s such a sweet person.”

Cowell didn’t stop there, offering some advice to the new judge. “You just gotta say how you feel,” he said. “It’s not that difficult doing this job, I promise you. We all feel the same things, and we don’t agree, thank God. Otherwise, life would be boring. And just enjoy it.”

Given her journey from a hopeful contestant to a multi-award-winning artist, Underwood knows all too well the emotional challenges contestants face when receiving feedback. Her experience offers a unique perspective that will be valuable to the new contestants. Although having been in their shoes, she brings a level of empathy that can both be a blessing and a challenge.

Underwood’s return to American Idol is particularly significant, marking almost 20 years since she auditioned for the show that launched her career. Despite critics who may “want to see her fall,” her extensive experience and versatility make her an excellent addition to the judges’ panel. Following Katy Perry’s departure, there was much speculation about who could fill her shoes. As it turns out, Underwood seems to be the perfect choice.

While auditions for the new season of American Idol are still ongoing, fans eager to chase their dreams are encouraged to sign up on the show’s official site. Although a premiere date has yet to be announced, enthusiasts can expect to see Carrie Underwood in her new role as a judge in early 2025, exclusively on ABC.
