Six Times Lil Wayne and Other Packers Fans Mentioned the Team in Lyrics

GREEN BAY — As the Green Bay Packers gear up for their first regular-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, it’s a fitting time to spotlight one of their most famous fans: Lil Wayne.

The New Orleans native is set to perform in Milwaukee on Oct. 19, just a day before a Packers home game on Oct. 20, potentially setting the stage for an appearance by the five-time Grammy winner at Lambeau Field.

Lil Wayne has sprinkled sports references throughout his musical career, often highlighting his love for the Packers. Here’s a rundown of some of these notable mentions, including a few from his peers:

The line: “And I never miss a game, no Shaq O’Neal/ More like Brett Favre, just like Brett Favre.”

In his 2007 track “Get High Rule The World,” Wayne pays homage to legendary Packers quarterback Brett Favre, known for his incredible durability. Favre never missed a game as a Packer, starting 297 NFL games and playing in 302 in total. The mention of Shaquille O’Neal serves as a slight diss towards the NBA Hall of Famer.

The line: “And I’m a cheesehead, word to Vince Lombardi.”

In the track “Ignant S**t,” Drake, whose loyalty to specific NFL teams has often been questionable, drops a Packers reference to coaching legend Vince Lombardi. Wayne, to whom Drake was signed back in 2009, also features on the track.

The line: “Replay the replays, Green Bay, the Packers.”

Chance The Rapper, a known Chicago sports fan, also mentions the Packers in his song “Good A** Intro.” Given the storied rivalry between the Packers and the Chicago Bears, it’s an interesting mention from someone hailing from Chicago. Chance’s line could allude to the controversial “Fail Mary” call from the 2012 game between the Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.

The line: “So take a swipe at me, I’m coming straight at you/ Like Clay Matthews from the Green Bay Packers.”

Eminem, a Detroit Lions fan, has had plenty of encounters with Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. In his album “SHADYXV,” Eminem references Matthews’ relentless playing style, citing the linebacker who holds the record for most sacks in Packers franchise history.

The line: “I open the Lamborghini, hopin’ the Packers see me/ Like, ‘Look at that Packer Wheezy!'”

During his performance at the ESPYs, Wayne delivered a remix of his Grammy award-winning track “A Milli.” Though not an official song, his ESPYs performance was another platform for Wayne to show his support for the Packers. In his remix, he gave shout-outs to other sports icons, but notably included his favorite team.

The line: “I’m Green Bay, every day if you ain’t know, then find out/ Green and yellow, that forever, we on go nonstop.”

Perhaps the most iconic Packers mention by Lil Wayne is his 2021 update of the song “Green and Yellow (Green Bay Packers Theme Song).” Released during a significant Packers playoff run, the track references various Packers players such as Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Preston Smith, and Bart Starr. Although some of the players mentioned have since left the team, the song remains a staple among fans.
