Sofia Vergara Stuns with Second Golden Buzzer Pick – Was it the Right Choice?

The power of the Golden Buzzer was enacted twice on Tuesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent, but only one use actually counted. Allow us to explain.

Australian comedian Reuben Solo had already received three X’s from the judges, along with plenty of boos from the unimpressed audience, when he boldly stepped up to the panel and slammed his own hand down on the Golden Buzzer — a first in AGT history as far as we can remember. Despite a flurry of golden confetti falling from the ceiling, and even the show playing Queen’s “We Are the Champions” in response, Solo will not be sent through to the Season 19 live shows. Terry Crews even pretended to check an invisible rule book before declaring that Solo’s supposed victory didn’t count.

Then came Japanese comedy duo Schumacher, whose entire act consisted of them crudely transforming into various animals using bodysuits, cheap Halloween masks, and, in one case, a bit of masking tape. It was one of the simplest, silliest acts we’ve seen on the AGT stage in a long time, but the perfectly timed music cues and overall absurdist humor made for a winning combination.

No one was more impressed, or bewildered, than Sofia Vergara, who couldn’t even find the words to describe what she’d just seen on stage. “I’m very confused, because I thought it was ridiculous,” she said. “It’s like a nonsense … I don’t know what it is, but I really, really think you deserve this.” And just like that, she hit the Golden Buzzer in front of her, sending the unlikely pair straight to the live shows.

Schumacher is now the ninth act to receive a Golden Buzzer in Season 19. Simon Cowell gave his pair to singer Liv Warfield and drone group Sky Elements, Heidi Klum gave hers to singers Richard Goodall and Pranysqa Mishra, and Howie Mandel gave his to dance group Brent Street and singer Reid Wilson. Meanwhile, Vergara has given one to dance group Legión, and Crews gave one to comedian Learnmore Jonasi.
