Software Issue Leads to Recall of 1.2M Ram Pickup Trucks in the U.S.

On September 7, Stellantis announced a significant recall impacting over 1.2 million Ram 1500 pickups due to a software glitch affecting the electronic stability control system.

This recall primarily involves Ram 1500 models manufactured from 2019 to 2024. The software issue could result in the inadvertent disabling of the electronic stability control systems in the affected vehicles.

According to Stellantis, the problem came to light following a routine examination of customer feedback, which initiated an internal investigation. This investigation revealed that certain trucks produced from 2019 through 2024 may contain ABS module software capable of deactivating the electronic stability control system.

The automaker has stated that the issue can be rectified through a complimentary software update available at local dealerships. Customers are encouraged to have their vehicles serviced to ensure they are safe to drive.

Importantly, Stellantis clarified that despite this software malfunction, the automobile’s braking system remains functional. At this time, company representatives have reported no incidents or injuries linked to the software issue.

This recall not only affects over 1.2 million vehicles in the United States but also extends to approximately 233,161 Ram 1500 pickups located in Canada, Mexico, and various other markets outside the United States.

Regulatory authorities mandate that vehicles equipped with electronic stability control systems must have these systems operational. The issue with the Ram pickups raises concerns about compliance with these regulations.

This latest recall follows a previous action taken by Stellantis in June, when the company recalled 211,581 SUVs and pickups in the U.S., again due to a software-related problem that affected the stability control system. Those recalled vehicles included the 2022 Dodge Durango, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500.

Stellantis is working diligently to ensure that affected vehicles are promptly serviced and that the software issue is resolved effectively. Customers impacted by this recall are urged to visit their nearest dealerships to obtain the necessary updates and ensure their safety on the road.
