Sonic the Hedgehog Fans React Strongly to New Movie Trailer

The Sonic the Hedgehog films have come a long way since the initial design for Sega’s beloved video game character sparked memes and backlash from fans. A 2022 sequel introduced Knuckles, voiced by Luther star Idris Elba. Now, an upcoming third film teases the arrival of another fan favorite—voiced by none other than the legendary Keanu Reeves.

Promising a “new adventure” and a “new rival,” the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on Tuesday. It showcases Knuckles bursting through the Elizabeth Tower (often incorrectly referred to as Big Ben) and Sonic sprinting up London’s iconic Tower Bridge.

We then learn there’s been a “high-level security breach” at a compound. Shadow (Reeves) is on the rampage, causing Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to team up with Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik, also known as “Doctor Eggman,” to take him down.

Before the nearly three-minute-long trailer ends, we see Carrey playing another member of the Robotnik family: Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of “Doctor Eggman.”

For those unfamiliar with the video game lore, (note that this may contain spoilers for the plot of the upcoming film) Gerald also created Shadow. Shadow is described as the “ultimate life form,” engineered to be an ageless, unstoppable living weapon—according to an explainer on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel.

Now that the trailer is out, fans are ecstatic about Shadow’s character. One user joked that the movie will usurp the current success of Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine. There’s also excitement for Carrey’s new Robotnik role.

Even animator Jeff Fowler tweeted about how “honored” he was to help animate Shadow in the new movie.

Fans will discover how all of this comes together when Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits cinemas in December.
