Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Celebrate Netflix Sequel News, Reclaiming Turf

You can go home again, it turns out… with Netflix’s help.

The streamer is bringing back the WB/CW teen favorite One Tree Hill with a new sequel series. Original stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton are onboard as stars and executive producers, both thrilled to get a chance to revisit their beloved show — on their terms.

“What if you really can go back home?” Bush and Burton pondered in a pair of Instagram posts on Friday, following the news. “If there’s an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents? Own our history? Reclaim our turf? Honor our fans? Sign us up.”

They added that “there’s only one Tree Hill, after all. And you — the #OTHfam — have shown us that it’s not just an idea. It really is the place where ‘everything’s better and everything’s safe.’”

Their desire to “own our history” and “reclaim our turf” may allude to the original series creator Mark Schwahn, who faced numerous sexual harassment allegations, including claims from Bush and Burton. Schwahn was ultimately fired as showrunner of The Royals and is not involved in Netflix’s One Tree Hill continuation. Instead, Becky Hartman Edwards (Switched at Birth, The Bold Type, Firefly Lane) takes over as writer.

Bush and Burton will reprise their breakout roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, respectively, in the sequel series. The follow-up will pick up 20 years later and follow Brooke and Peyton as they parent teenagers of their own. According to Deadline, Chad Michael Murray is not expected to reprise his part as Lucas Scott.
