South Carolina Forward Ashlyn Watkins Faces Assault, Kidnapping Charges

Ashlyn Watkins, a prominent player on the South Carolina women’s basketball team, was arrested on Saturday after being charged with first-degree assault and battery, as well as kidnapping. The incident occurred at the student housing center of the university.

The arrest took place around 3 p.m. ET. Watkins was released approximately 30 minutes later after being granted a $30,000 personal recognizance bond. It’s reported that Watkins admitted her involvement in the incident, which was captured on video surveillance footage.

According to a warrant filed by campus police, the assault involved Watkins forcibly grabbing the victim’s face, pulling her by the arms, and pushing her. The kidnapping charge arose because she allegedly controlled the victim’s movements by grabbing her head and forcing her to walk down the hall, preventing her from leaving.

Emergency responders, including police and the fire department, were called to the scene after the victim was able to escape from Watkins. She activated a fire alarm to alert others. The warrant states that the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention.

Watkins has been a notable player for the South Carolina team, contributing significantly to their success. She was part of the roster that helped bring home the title at the 2024 NCAA women’s basketball championship. During the 2023-24 season, the 6-foot-3 junior forward played 38 games, averaging 9.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.4 blocks.

The university has not yet provided any official statement regarding the incident involving Watkins. As the situation unfolds, the Gamecocks are preparing to begin their 2024-25 season, set to tip off against North Carolina State on November 10.
