SpaceX Sends 4 People, Including a Billionaire, on a Historic Spaceflight

Falcon 9 Rocket Launch
The 15-story Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched toward space.

  • Polaris Dawn marks a major private spaceflight funded by billionaire Jared Isaacman.
  • The crew of four, who are not professional astronauts, aims to conduct the first commercial spacewalk.
  • This mission could contribute significantly to advancements needed for future Mars missions.

SpaceX has successfully launched the Polaris Dawn mission, a private spaceflight that aims to push the boundaries of what civilian missions can achieve. This mission stands out as the most ambitious crewed flight since the Apollo program, marking a significant leap in private space travel.

This fully private mission is backed by billionaire Jared Isaacman, the founder of Shift4, a secure payment technology company. Unlike typical space tourism situations, Polaris Dawn is set up to support substantive research and exploration efforts that align with Elon Musk’s vision of establishing a human settlement on Mars.

The crew for this historic journey includes two SpaceX engineers, Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis, along with former US Air Force pilot Scott Poteet. Isaacman serves as the commander, bringing experience from his previous mission, Inspiration4, which was the world’s first all-civilian spaceflight.

Polaris Dawn Crew
The Polaris Dawn crew includes Anna Menon, Scott Poteet, Jared Isaacman, and Sarah Gillis.

On Tuesday morning, the crew boarded their Crew Dragon spacecraft positioned atop a towering Falcon 9 rocket within a launchpad in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The precise moment the rocket’s engines ignited was at 5:23 a.m. ET, propelling the vehicle into the dark expanse of space.

With plans for a five-day mission filled with experiments, the Polaris Dawn crew has several objectives, including conducting an unprecedented spacewalk. Understanding the impact of radiation on human bodies is a critical component of their mission, directly linked to potential future trips to Mars.

The astronauts aim to travel through a region known for intense radiation, gathering data on its effects on their health along the way. Isaacman emphasized the importance of taking precautions for future Mars explorers, saying, “If we get to Mars someday, we’d love to be able to come back and be healthy enough to tell people about it.”

Diving into the intense radiation levels will allow the crew to monitor vital health metrics, such as heart rates, respiratory functions, and eyesight. This mission is set to take them farther from Earth than any astronaut has ventured since the final Apollo missions over five decades ago.

Monitoring Space Health
The Polaris Dawn team will track their health while navigating space’s environment.

One of the key objectives of this mission is to test out the first commercial spacewalk. The crew plans to open their Crew Dragon spaceship and expose its interior to the vacuum of space while wearing newly developed SpaceX spacesuits. This innovative move is a necessary step towards figuring out how to handle potential repairs on long voyages, like those to Mars.

According to Abhi Tripathi, a former Dragon mission director at SpaceX, this groundbreaking spacewalk presents a calculated risk that will pave the way for future missions to Mars. He explained that having spacesuits designed to withstand the conditions of space is “critical” for their exploration goals.

The Polaris Dawn mission is just the beginning of an overarching program that aims to enhance capabilities for subsequent missions. Currently, while the details for the second mission remain undisclosed, there is confirmation that the third mission will mark the first crewed flight of Starship. This significant vehicle is expected to ferry goods and people to Mars, which is vital for achieving Musk’s ultimate vision of creating a human settlement on the red planet.

As the Polaris program unfolds, the potential for deeper exploration becomes clearer. Musk’s ambitions for a Martian settlement drive the foundational work being done here, with individuals like Isaacman leading the way into a new era of space exploration.
