Spider-Verse Fan Favorite Meets Their Marvel Comics Counterpart

The latest title in Marvel’s Spider-Man Family of comics has introduced a character from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to their comic book counterpart. While fans eagerly await the next installment of Sony’s “Spider-Verse” films, the Marvel Universe is swiftly leveraging its success with the launch of “Spider-Society.” The new series brings together many heroes from across the Spider-Verse as they team up to thwart an impending threat. Iconic characters like Miles Morales, Ghost-Spider, Spider-Ham, and others form the Spider-Society, along with “Across the Spider-Verse’s” motorcycle-riding Jessica Drew, who finally comes face-to-face with the more widely recognized Spider-Woman.

Spider-Society #1 is the brainchild of Alex Segura, Scott Godlewski, Matt Milla, and VC’s Joe Caramagna. This issue picks up from events in the Web of Spider-Man one-shot and the Edge of Spider-Verse miniseries, where Madame Web had recruited Spider-Man 2099 for a covert mission. As Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Ghost-Spider, arrive at the Spider-Society’s headquarters, they encounter fellow heroes like Web-Weaver, Hunter-Spider, Weapon VIII, Spider-Punk, and Earth-616’s Spider-Woman. The group is awaiting Madame Web’s arrival to understand the purpose behind their congregation when the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” arrives on her motorcycle.

This leads to an exciting first meeting between the two Spider-Women. Earth-616’s Spider-Woman is impressed, exclaiming, “That bike is cool as hell.” The multi-verse Jessica Drew responds, “Thank you. I’m fond of it. Excited to work with you too.”

However, this joyful occasion takes a tragic turn. The Spider-Society soon finds out that they have walked straight into a trap. Madame Web did not call them together; instead, a new group of supervillains calling themselves the Sinister Squadron has set them up. The Sinister Squadron ambushes the Spider-Society and captures several members, including Miles Morales and Ghost-Spider. This villainous group features a Gwen Stacy version of Green Goblin, and their ultimate aim is to obliterate the Spider-Society. Madame Web and Araña (Anya Corazon) narrowly escape with a few remaining heroes, who are now tasked with the mission to rescue their friends.

The newly downsized Spider-Society now comprises Araña, Web-Weaver, Weapon VIII, Spider-Verse’s Jessica Drew, Hunter-Spider, Spider-Punk, and Spider-Cat. Within this team, Spider-Verse’s Jessica Drew is considered a secret weapon. The Sinister Squadron is only familiar with Earth-616’s Spider-Woman, giving the Spider-Society an edge since the villains are unaware of Jessica Drew’s unique abilities and background. Additionally, her prior encounters with some members of the Sinister Squadron provide crucial intel that the Spider-Society can use to their advantage.
